Don Valley MP Caroline Flint has welcomed a huge investment in Doncaster by Amazon after visiting a new fulfilment centre at the iPort, as she visited to see the smooth operation getting Santa’s presents to homes on time.
The MP was given a tour of the centre, which is the size of 15 football pitches, by General Manager, Stuart Morgan, Lesley Smith, Director of UK Public Policy.
Said Ms Flint: “This investment by Amazon is a huge vote of confidence in Doncaster. The company already has a well-established fulfilment centre plus a robotics facility and a major distribution site in Doncaster. This new facility has grown quickly to employ in the region of 1,000 people, and I’m sure this will continue to grow over the coming months.”
The MP toured the centre for more than two hours and talked to staff en route.
Said Caroline: “This centre showed a huge amount of investment in the workforce; and a workplace that has natural light and space to work. I saw a company that runs a variety of shifts, which means staff having three days off each week.”
Said Stuart Morgan, General Manager: “Our fulfilment centre at iPort has only been open fourteen weeks, but already we’re really busy with Christmas orders. We were delighted Caroline spent so long with us to understand our vision, our approach to our customers; and what we bring to Doncaster.”
The MP said the iPort was already proving an important strategic location. “Right next to the Great Yorkshire Way, iPort has got four major employers, over 2,000 people working here and the new rail connection in place. This site alone is a vindication for all of us who campaigned to get the FARRRS link road built.”
