Flint demands enquiry on prisoner escapes

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint has demanded an enquiry into the escapes from Hatfield Open Prison.

Ms Flint, whose constituency includes Hatfield Open Prison, said: “It is extraordinary that an offender serving a term for a violent knife offence is in an open prison.  And I’m also concerned about whether an open prison is the right place for remand prisoners who have been refused bail.

“This raises the whole question of how secure our prison system is.  These are not the first escapes, and it is not the first time that serious offenders appear to be have been put in low security prisons.”

“Open prisons have a valuable contribution to make, but are undermined if the wrong class of inmates are placed there.”

The MP will be raising the matter with the Justice Secretary when Parliament returns.

The HMP Hatfield escapes are the third sets of escapes across the country in three weeks.

Shadow Justice Secretary, Sadiq Khan MP, said:

"It growing clearer by the day that Ministers are no longer in control of their own department. Chris Grayling's regime at the Ministry of Justice has turned into an utter shambles. On this government's watch the rules on who can be in open prisons and released on licence have been relaxed. And with increased overcrowding and deep cuts to prison officers corners are being cut and the public's safety is being put at risk. Chris Grayling is usually quick to seek an easy headline but his silence on this matter is deafening - he seems to have no answers whatsoever."
