In the face of doubts over the funding of the HS2 Rail College in Doncaster, Caroline Flint has received confirmation from Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills that the Government remains committed to the Doncaster location.

At Business Questions, the Don Valley MP asked: “Doncaster was absolutely delighted when we secured one of the two sites for the national college for High Speed Rail in Doncaster.  But it seems the Government is a bit luke warm about this.  Now we want to get on developing and expanding apprenticeship opportunities in the rail industry.  Can the secretary of State confirm that he still fully backs the site in Doncaster for the National College for High Speed Rail?

The Minister (Sajid Javid) replied: “I am happy to reassure her we are committed to this college.  I think it is not only right that it is in Doncaster, but I think it will make a big difference in what is a very important area for future infrastructure.”

HS2_Train_3.jpgSpeaking after the news, Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “This is exactly the reassurance we hoped for, for this exciting project.  Now we need the Government to confirm the funding, so we can really start to make things happen.”

Said Vic Holbrey, Director of Operations at Doncaster Chamber:  “The Chamber is a strong supporter of the Rail College, and we welcome new investment in the skills base here in Doncaster.  Now the Government’s intentions are clear, we just need the confirmation of the investment and Doncaster will add another jewel to its crown.”
