Campaigners against illegal parking have been told by Doncaster’s Mayor that the Council can do nothing with photographs showing drivers parking illegally on zig-zag lines because “the computer says NO”.
In a reply to Caroline Flint, Mayor Davies states “With regard to photographic evidence from third parties, I can confirm that we would need to obtain details of the vehicle owner. Our contract with DVLA for access to their database is restricted to access only when a penalty charge notice that has been served has not been paid”.
Said Caroline Flint: “I am completely dismayed by this response. This is like a scene from Little Britain. No one thinks it is a bad idea, but the computer won’t let us do it. An issue that I thought would be straight forward is turning into a farce. It makes Mayor Davies look incompetent.”
Said Phil Beavers, Chair of Governors at Tickhill St Marys School: “We have heard many reasons why the Council cannot prosecute these drivers, as a caring authority we should be hearing how they can. If they are unable to be present to monitor the traffic at all schools, then they should be able to act on photographic evidence, in the same way as the police.”
