MP responds to fracking plans

Commenting on plans for fracking in Nottinghamshire, Don Valley MP Caroline Flint said:

“My office attended the exhibition held by iGas in July and I am meeting company representatives in October.

“So far, I have not seen any plans for fracking close to Austerfield or Bawtry.  At present, iGas plans relate to an area North East of Austerfield to the East of Robin Hood Airport.  We will know more about their plans only when iGas have acquired a site, at which point they will have to submit a planning application for exploration.

“I have made a number of demands of the Government in terms of the standards required from fracking operations.  The Government has met four of our six environmental and safety standards and iGas believe that they meet five of our demands.

“It is only sensible that if we can produce gas here in the UK, in a safe and sustainable way, that will reduce our dependency on foreign imports of gas, then we should support it.  But the Chancellor’s idea that fracking is some silver bullet for the UK’s energy needs is just hype and nonsense.”

IGas is acquiring the licencing rights owned by Dart Energy for an area of 56km2 east of Bawtry/Austerfield.  Doncaster and Nottinghamshire are well known for having exploited coal and conventional gas from underground.  Dart’s initial application was to undertake a seismic survey to produce a 3D diagram of the sub-strata.

Now that is complete, experts says the next stage is to find a site and to test drill, about 2-3km deep, probably for around two months, before they can establish whether there is a viable source of gas, and the best location to extract it from.
