MP demands Shale Wealth Fund be used for energy efficiency

Energy campaigner Caroline Flint is calling on the Government to use the revenue from shale gas exploration to improve the energy efficiency of Britain’s homes.

The Government is proposing that 1% of the revenue from each well is placed into a dedicated fund, known as the Shale Wealth Fund.  The Government is also proposing a £100,000 community fund from each well, for local community benefit.

Said Caroline: “Shale gas divides opinion, and I support stricter regulations than the Government has placed on the industry.  But whatever view you take on the merits of shale gas, if a fund is to be created, I believe it needs to be one with a dedicated, environmental purpose.  I believe that purpose should be to create warmer homes, and reduce our dependence on gas and other fossil fuels.”
