NHS Redundanies

The widely criticised NHS re-organisation has already cost over £1.6million in redundancies across South Yorkshire to date, according to figures provided by Government Ministers to Don valley MP Caroline Flint, but Ms Flint warned that this is a serious under-estimate.

Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley revealed in a letter to the Don Valley MP that the local NHS in Doncaster has paid out over £251,000 in redundancy payments and £1.65million across South Yorkshire.

Said Caroline:  “I firmly believe that the Government’s figures are seriously out of date.  Doncaster’s PCT has already lost one third of its staff – over 100 posts – so this figure of £251,000 looks to be well under the actual cost.

“At a time when waiting lists are creeping up and A&E departments are full, how many operations and treatments could be provided for £1.65million.  This is money wasted on a re-organisation that no-one wants and offers no benefits for patient care.

“The Government has caused unnecessary upheaval; forcing our local Primary Care Trust to pay off one third of staff; only for another NHS body to employ them again.  This is a scandalous waste of money and it shows how out of touch the Government is with the needs of patients.”

The MP will be demanding a more up to date figure from the Minister in January.

The NHS in Doncaster has lost over 130 staff in the past year.  The Primary Care Trusts covering South Yorkshire (and Bassetlaw) over 400.

Ms Flint’s believes that the £251,000 is an under-estimate because NHS redundancy terms pay 1 month per year of service.  Even one senior manager leaving would cost over £100,000; so to suggest that 130 redundancies have only cost £251,000 cannot be accurate.

One month after taking redundancy, staff may take up new jobs within the NHS.
