Rotherham child abuse - MP welcomes Independent Investigation in

Welcoming the Independent Inquiry into South Yorkshire Police and the Rotherham child abuse scandal Caroline Flint said:

“It will be a long time before the shadow cast by the dreadful abuse of so many children, mainly young girls, passes.

“It is quite right that there is a full investigation of the role of the South Yorkshire Police.  A lot of people are saying ‘lessons must be learnt’ but equally important is that those responsible are held to account.

“Shaun Wright should definitely resign; and all of those in authority who should have acted regarding these dreadful events should be accountable for their failures.

“Sadly, like Savile and so many other cases of abuse, it was the victims, mainly young girls, who were not believed, while the men who organised the abuse continued for years with impunity; and those in authority turned away.  The victims deserve justice and hopefully the Jay Report is just the beginning.”
